Lujan sees riders approaching, calls to Zachary, and they flee, leaving the girl behind. The riders turn out to be Josefa and one of her ranch-hands, who now spot Douglass coming toward them from another direction.
Douglass goes to his ranch to get fresh mounts, but finds that the fugitives have taken his last horses. He leaves Josefa with his daughter.
In a town just across the Mexican border, Douglass enters a bar and finds Zachary. The outlaw claims to not know the woman in the picture Douglass shows him and shouts at him to let him be.
Douglass draws his gun, Zachary pulls his, and Douglass shoots him dead. He then goes on to the home of the fourth man, Lujan, who has a family of his own.
When shown a photo of Douglass's wife, Lujan says he has never seen the woman before. He recalls that he and his companions had ridden past the ranch.
Douglass points to Lujan's sack of coins and tells him that whoever killed his wife stole that from his ranch. Lujan explains that he took the bag from Butler, whereupon Douglass realizes that Butler was the murderer.
Now knowing that the four men whom he pursued had nothing to do with his wife's death, Douglass realizes that he is no better than they were, having killed three of them in cold blood.
He returns to town and goes to the church to ask for forgiveness. The priest says that while he cannot condone Douglass' actions, he respects him for not making excuses for what he has done.
Josefa arrives with Douglass' daughter, and they exit the church together. The film is notable for including a rare serious role for Joe DeRita who, around the time the film was released, became "Curly Joe" of the Three Stooges.
Weiler, gave it a positive review, writing, "Despite these flaws, which are fundamentally minor deficiencies, The Bravados emerges as a credit to its makers.
The canyons, towering mountains, forests and waterfalls of the natural locales used, make picturesque material for the color cameras.

Like many of his contemporaries, King set down his camera and let it sit for a while, allowing the movie-goer to make up his mind gradually.
This, however, is a movie of short takes and moving cameras. It might not be apparent to someone familiar with movies shot only in the past twenty years, but watch what happens when Gregory Peck is in the shot: the camera moves like mad to keep him in the frame and you get frequent point of view shots from the character's perspective.
Also watch for the perfectly framed compositions, another hallmark of the directors who started their work in the silent era.
A lot of credit, of course, to his regular cameraman, Leonard Shamroy, a great script and marvelous performances. But that moving camera is not his usual style.

In der Kommune kommt es zu einem unerwarteten Wiedersehen mit Josefa Velarde, mit der er fünf Jahre früher in New Orleans ein Verhältnis hatte, bevor er eine Andere heiratete und Vater einer Tochter namens Helen wurde.
Doch er überlegt es sich anders und betritt das Gotteshaus. In Wirklichkeit ist es ein Fluchthelfer, und obwohl dieser bei der Aktion getötet wird, können die vier Delinquenten entkommen.
Als sie sich im örtlichen Laden Gewehre und Munition besorgen, taucht dort gerade Emma Steinmetz auf, um für ihren in der Kirche Schmerzen bekommen habenden Vater etwas Arznei zu holen; der auf Frauen fixierte Flüchtling Zachary nimmt sie sofort als willkommene Geisel.
Während die vier wegreiten, alarmiert der schwerverletzte Sheriff die Einwohner. Auf Drängen von Emmas Vater wird eine Posse zusammengestellt, doch Douglass will zur Verwunderung Josefas zunächst nicht mitreiten; er glaubt an sein Wissen über die Handlungsmuster der Verbrecher und dass er allein eine bessere Chance hat.
Die Flüchtenden ihrerseits fürchten weniger die Posse als vielmehr den Einzelgänger, der ihnen trotz vorausgegangener Gegenüberstellung im Sheriff-Gewahrsam völlig unbekannt ist.
Danach soll Ed Taylor die Eliminierung des Unbarmherzigen übernehmen, doch auch dessen Versuch scheitert; er wird von Douglass mit Kopf nach unten auf einem Baum aufgehängt und stirbt.
Derweil hat Josefa vom Pater etwas mehr über das Schicksal des Ex-Lovers erfahren und will sich um die bei mexikanischen Ranchgehilfen untergekommene Helen kümmern; zusammen mit einem Bekannten reitet sie der Posse und Douglass nach.
Dieser fürchtet alsbald um sein Leben und flieht, dabei ein kleines Säckchen mitführend. Das vierte Bandenmitglied, der junge Mexikaner Leandro Lujan, untersucht die Leiche, findet das mit Münzen gefüllte Säckchen und versteckt es vor dem Komplizen.
Jetzt ist nur noch Lujan übrig, welcher in der Taverne im Hintergrund geblieben war, jedoch trotzdem von Douglass verfolgt werden kann.
Als er wieder zu Bewusstsein kommt, will Lujan von ihm den Grund der tödlichen Mission wissen, denn auch er kennt die Frau auf dem Bild nicht, gibt aber zu, mit seinen Komplizen auf dem Weg zum Rio Arriba-Überfall an der Douglass-Ranch vorbeigeritten zu sein.
Der Rächer glaubt ihm nicht, weil er das Säckchen wiedererkennt — es gehört ihm, enthielt die Ersparnisse seiner Familie.
Lujan beteuert, das Säckchen dem toten Butler abgenommen zu haben, und nach einigen Sekunden des Zweifelns erkennt Douglass, dass nur sein Nachbar für den Mord an seiner Frau verantwortlich gewesen sein kann; er lässt Lujan in Frieden und reitet zurück.

Jim believes the men murdered his wife and wants them to suffer. However, things go awry when the convicts escape from jail, kidnapping young Emma Kathleen Gallant as they gallop out of town.
A search party forms with Jim in the lead, especially intent on catching them. He encounters each villain individually, growing closer to rescuing Emma and exacting his revenge.

View All Critic Reviews 5. Oct 11, Gregory Peck solidly embodies a tortured soul relentlessly chasing after the four who raped and killed his beloved wife, so it's a revenge flick, although it notably takes it's good and sweet time revealing it's hand so's it can build tension with the character.
The nature of the twist at the ending has lost it's moral punch in the succeeding generations since the film was made, but nonetheless this is still a serviceable effort.

He follows them to a small town where they were going to be hung for their evil deeds. Whilst there me meets a former gal pal, Joan Collins Josefa , who is still madly in love with him and has never married.
Naturally, things go wrong: the bad guys escape, taking a young female hostage Kathleen Gallant with them and Douglass sets off, with the posse, to recapture them although Douglass is set upon dispensing summary justice if possible.
And that he does to three of the bravados, but when catching up with the fourth, the Indian Lujan Henry Silva , Douglass discovers that his vengeful mission has been seriously flawed from the get-go.
Lee van Cleef portrays one of the bad guys in his usual eye piercing style. Peck does an admirable job of portraying a steely-eyed, single-minded 'hunter' hell-bent on vengeance against all cost and Joan Collins wasn't half bad as the rekindled love interest.
The leering Stephen Boyd is also memorable as Bill, the psychotic outlaw ready for rape and murder any time it suits him.
