BLACK SWAN Featurette: Natalie Portman's Training

First Position , directed by Bess Kargman, is an excellent film about young ballet dancers. For reasons I can't understand, as I write this review, the movie carries an IMDb rating of a dismal 6.

How can that be? Did the viewers who rated it "1" see the same film I saw? The movie follows seven young ballet dancers as they prepare for, and then compete in, the prestigious Grand Prix competition.

As pointed out in the movie, many physical activities in which people participate involve natural movements for which the human body is well suited.

Catching a baseball, swimming, or climbing a rope are not easy, but our species has the natural physical capabilities to do these things.

Ballet dancing, especially en pointe ballet dancing, is not a natural activity for us. We simply are not constructed to literally walk on the tips of our toes.

The feet have to be trained and remodeled to allow this activity to take place. And, of course, not only do ballet dancers dance on their toes, but when they are doing this they are supposed to make their movements elegant, graceful, and apparently effortless.

Although male ballet dancers don't dance en pointe, their movements are also extraordinarily difficult. One young male dancer shows us his "foot stretcher," and tells us, "It hurts a lot.

Director Kargman has put together a documentary that takes us inside the lives of these young dancers. We meet their coaches, their families, and their judges.

Also, of course, we go to the Grand Prix with the dancers, and we learn whether they succeed or fail. I thought the movie was honest, creative, and balanced.

These young people are not "regular kids who happen to take ballet. First Position brings us into the world of ballet training, and allows us to make our own decisions about the wisdom of encouraging your child to dance and compete at this level.

It lowers the normal audio to a whisper, but it is very interesting as to what Bess says during the whole film.

Of course watch the film first with the normal audio, so you have an idea what is going on, before listening to Bess. I am saddened by Rebecca Houseknecht's story, but that is life.

As she gets children of her own, she may become aware of her selfishness. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. This touching film is as moving for the human stories and relationships as for the quality of the dancing performed by the four girls and two boys, competing in the Youth America Grand Prix.

Neither are we spared the heart-break of their mistakes and failures; their handling of tension, stress, disappointment, injury and prejudice;their poor, battered feet and the foot-stretching torture to produce that beautiful convex instep!

However, we are more than uplifted by the sensitive interactions between pupils and teachers and the devotion and unfailing support of both parents.

Skate-boarding comedian, Aran,11,full of joy and passion, has a military Dad based in Italy, where he trains.

The father of Miko and Jules approves of the beneficial effects on the family life-style. Joan Sebastian, although adored and missed he trains in N.

The foster parents of Michaela rescued her as an orphan from the civil war in Sierra Leone where her parents and teacher were killed and brought her back to Philadelphia.

They have devoted themselves to fulfilling her dream of becoming a 'delicate' black dancer, inspired by the image of a ballerina she saw on the cover of a dance magazine.

Miko,12, and Jules,10, are driven by their ambitious,Japanese Mum also a competent pianist who pays for additional private tuition.

Her influence has a very good effect on one child but more negative results on the other. She is clearly fulfilling a dream,as is the mother of Joan Sebastian, who describes herself as a 'frustrated ballerina'.

Although it was 'weird' for a boy to be a ballet dancer in Colombia, she overcame her qualms. Joan Sebastian himself wants to emulate Carlos Acosta at the Royal Ballet but he also strives for the sake of his parents.

We are so wrapped up in the fortunes of these young dancers that by the time we reach the awards ceremony at the end of the film you are desperate for them to receive a medal, scholarship or contract.

This is an indication of how the clever crafting of this film has worked on you. A captivating dance documentary that can be watched over and over again.

Some of the dancers are now ballet and dance stars of different companies around the world, but here you see them as they train, struggle with injuries and the day to day grind in the hope of forging a career in dance.

Well worth a buy for any young dancer who has not already seen this. I am a ballet teacher and had my eye on this film for a while so, when a couple of my students recommended it I sat down to watch it.

I say 'sat down' but in reality I sat for 5 minutes and then got up and stretched while watching it. You simply can't sit and do nothing while watching these wonderfully talented kids work so hard.

It's incredibly inspiring. You really invest in each story and hope they can all achieve their dream sadly of course, that's unlikely.

I have recommended it to all my students, and funnily enough, some have watched it before coming to class, and then really blown me away with how hard they're working!

Fantastic film. Yet another documentary following young people in a competition. However this is ballet and the physical endeavour is wonderful to behold.

If you are disappointed that the dances at the last stage are cut short, search for them in the extras. Look on the internet to find what the dancers did later.

Joan, Aran and Michaela have done especially well. Five stars. Brilliant observational documentary on the aspirations of 5 young talented dancers.

Every story is different but equally engaging and the access the film-makers had is exceptional. You don't have to be a classical dance devotee which I'm not to be astounded by this documentary.

The dance element is brilliant but it's the human aspect which is just so compelling. The negative is the absence of the Director's commentary that can be found on the region one edition of this.

Asked 6 years, 8 months ago. And after taking a peek at her Twitter , it looks like she's still involved in the dance, as a ballet teacher at Maryland Performing Arts Center.

Joan Sebastian Zamora was a year-old grown up. He was living in New York City during filming, away from his parents in his native Colombia.

Zamora had squeaky-clean technique for a young dancer. At the end of First Position , we learned that he was given a scholarship to study at the Royal Ballet School.

After graduating from there, Zamora joined the English National Ballet, where he danced for two seasons. Californian Miko Fogarty was sort of what you would expect of a serious ballet-dancer-to-be.

She left traditional schooling to do homeschooling so that she could spend more hours during the day dancing, and her mom was a stereotypically obsessive dance mom.

But all those sacrifices paid off. Fogarty's dancing had a maturity well beyond her 12 years. Since the film, Fogarty went on to win tons of medals, including gold at the Moscow International Ballet Competition, silver and bronze at Varna, and a Prix de Lausanne Award.

She has gained a crazy social media following. Her Instagram has more than , followers. She now dances with the Birmingham Royal Ballet.

The gifted Michaela DePrince had a crazy-inspiring story. Born in Sierra Leone, her parents were shot by rebels. With no one to take care of her, DePrince was put in an orphanage.

DePrince had an incredible balance of flexibility and strength, and was clearly going to go far. Since then, she's taken on several principal roles at the company.

And just this month, DePrince was promoted to grand sujet for the —17 season. As the coronavirus pandemic stretches on, the dance world continues to be faced with unprecedented challenges, but USC Kaufman's faculty and BFA students haven't shied away from them.

While many schools have had to cancel events or scale them back to live-from-my-living-room streams, USC Kaufman has embraced the situation and taken on impressive endeavors, like expanding its online recruitment efforts.

I have viewed it six times. The only critical I can say about this DVD are the commercials of movies at the front, which come on automatically..

But you can easily use your remote to skip over them by clicking the "next chapter" button seven times. I strongly suggest you view this film at least once with the director's comments turned on.
