The task of reprogramming the son's mind requires the team to go to levels of consciousness they have not attempted to penetrate before.
Basically, they create a dream within a dream and take it one level further by creating one more dream state. At every level of the dream state, time slows down to where the team can have weeks to accomplish a goal which is actually taking place in real time in a matter of minutes.
The catch to working in the dream state is that if a person dies in the altered state of consciousness they also die in reality.
This adds to the excitement of the movie because the son's dream state creates assassins who are trying to protect him.
The storyline of the movie contains a story within a story itself. The underlying story revolves around Dom Cobb and his wife, who committed suicide several years earlier.
