The ensemble gels well together, but it is Danny Glover's and Kevin Kline's Characters that steer this boat and without it being over the top mushy, it simply gives us a view of how maybe we take chance encounters for granted.
I watched this today and was blown away, especially the scene in the Diner when Kevin Kline takes Danny Glover to Breakfast is so well done.
If you like movies that focus on characters, then get this. I have seen this movie numerous times, and it's quirky charm remains intact.
Great acting by a stellar cast, unique yet relevant plot-lines, and absolutely brilliant photography. This is a very good movie that came out at the right time with the right actors well done!!!
The characters are people you'd want to have a beer with individually and collectively. Grand Canyon shows how people can positively impact one and other with minimal effort.
It shows how one good deed can rapidly compound to change a life and how people in different walks of life need each other.
The multiple story lines build on each other and tell a series of stories that provide insight. The helicopters that roam LA skies at night are explained.

Successful middle-aged lawyer, Kline. Tries to beat the traffic on his way home from a Lakers game. In doing so, he winds up on the wrong side of town, at the wrong time of night and his car has just died on him!
And it's at this point part of a local gang shows up!! Just as he thinks he might never make it off the street, never mind get safely home!
Garage mechanic Simon beautifully understated performance from Danny Glover shows up and somehow manages to talk the gang out of committing serious harm to either himself or kline.
For some reason, this seems to bother Kline. So the following day, he goes back to Glover's garage. Just to chat and say thank you. Thus begins a connection between the two men who under ordinary circumstances, might never have met.
Add to this middle-aged angst in the form of long term marriage, short term affair, kids growing up and about to leave the nest.
And you get the idea that a lot of middle-aged folk are wondering what it is they're supposed to do next!
This is a great movie and i thoroughly recommend it. A masterpiece I saw this at the cinema when it came out,it was amazing then and it still is.
All about people and life and relationships,amazing script wonderful acting,a film full of hope,if your a film buff you must own this films of this quality are rare.
Report abuse. This is one of my all time favourite films with two of my favourite actors Mary and Alfre. I have bought this film for members of my family that had missed it when it was first released so they could enjoy it too.

Set in Los Angeles, and gliding gracefully among a representative set of characters, the film means to move through different economic strata, age groups and racial backgrounds in its search for common experience.
If the ambition to do this is ultimately more impressive than the hazy, unfocused outcome, Mr. Kasdan still deserves a lot of credit for what he has tried.

This City of the Angels captured by Kasdan, its skies buzzing with helicopters, reminds us most of all of Vietnam.
But this is not war, it's suicide, America in the latent stages of self-inflicted apocalypse. Kasdan validates our fears, but he doesn't strip us of all hope, for the central image also promises something greater than ourselves.
The view from the edge can be awesome. Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly chided the film for its " It's the sort of movie that says: Life is worth living.
After a couple of hours spent with characters this enjoyable, the message — in all its forthright sentimentality — feels earned.
