Warning to all Jackie Chan fans! If you want to learn about the swirling mess that was China in , you won't find a better picture. That said, it's a little hard for Westerners like myself to keep all the threads of that chaotic time straight enough to follow the story.

Movie is thrown into generalization with bad subtitling. It was weak. This is not a typical Jackie Chan film, it is the historically accurate story of the birth of modern China and the overthrow of corrupt Imperial dynasty.

All the death in the fighting did not really change as the warlords came to power instead of the queen, and the corruption continued.
But how close the people came to a more just society. Jackie Chan is playing a straight acting role without the stunts, but he produced it and I think it was the story of how close the people came to justice.

With Jackie Chan changing the world of Martial Art movie for the better, who the hell thought it was a good idea not have Jackie Chan as the main star or director of his own monumental film and direct a film on the th anniversary of Chinese Revolution.
Now while watching this movie I never felt like I was watching a movie, it felt more reading a textbook because at random I would get barely readable text that would tell me what's going on.
With the bad direction of this movie I'm not surprised and neither would you. The story could have been better and they could done something with some of the more sensitive issues going on around this time instead of avoiding them.
What you get here is slightly above average story that should have been better. It really does not try too hard keep your attention and you'll likely fall asleep watching it like my girlfriend did.
What the movie does well works, like the battle sequences are the high point of the movie. Now while there're not anything impressive, they make the movie a little bit more bearable to watch.
The sets are fantastic, the costumes look convincing, and the actors all do a great job in there roles despite the boring script and often times uninteresting characters.
One thing I will hit on is that the editing is bad as we get rapid fast cuts that don't work and some continuity error.

There's far too much information in far too small a film. There's no emotional attachment to anyone and I got fed up of hearing about martyrs to the cause.
If this film had taken its time, developed its characters and set the scenes better I might have cared what was going on. My guess is this was a cynical ploy to cash in on Chinese patriotism with lots of flag waving and martyrdom.
It's rather boring. I was expecting a lot more action but not realising this was a historical renactment of certain instants of history so for me I will be keeping it filed away for study, Having said that I did find that some of the actual facts had been glossed over and an interpretation of events was portrayed relying on heresay or conjecture rather than actual fact.
So the story teller has taken quite a lot of poetic licence. It is a film that certainly makes you think about the stuggles and it did inspire me to do my own research so in that respect it was a gleaming success.
Sun Yet-sen, is the father of the Chinese Republic. Say what you want about Mao, no one has a bad word to say about Sun Yet-sen. And rightly so This movie, seems to want to tell us every detail of the revolution.
All well and and good, but we are drowned by facts, that makes this a very dull and uninteresting film, that is told MUCH better in other films, on the same subject, like Bodyguards and Assassins, or The Great Revival.
Anyone expecting a Jackie C movie will be disappointed though thy do sneak one short martial arts fight in for him but it is a serious history film, as other reviewers have pointed out.
It is visually well done but suffers from the problem such films have - how to explain what it going on without turning into a documentary.
The battle scenes are excellent and a lot of effort has been put into details like uniforms and period detail.
But at the end of the day, it is really only one for history buffs who already have some interest in the period. Nice to see Jackie Chan in a serious role rather than a martial arts film.
