Review by M. I always seem to forget just how catchy that theme tune is. In fact, I think out of all the John Carpenter themes and soundtracks, for that matter the one for Assault On Precinct 13 is my favourite.

It's also a soundtrack that does for the atmosphere of this film at its key moments the kind of job that ALL soundtracks are supposed to do. In fact, as I was commenting to my wife last night, when I first saw Assault On Precinct 13 as a 13 year old as part of a Moviedrome series I actually recognised the theme tune even though I had definitely never seen the film before.

Not sure where…. A 70s favourite that I haven't seen in years, until a company Second Sight finally bothered to release a special edition Blu-ray over here.

Many would claim that Halloween is the film that put John Carpenter on the map. I for one however would have to disagree.

Assault on Precinct 13 is that one for me, a tense and brutal urban-western that I'd rank upon the best of 70s action-thrillers.

Set across several hours in a 1-day period, Precinct 13 explores a renegade L. They launch a bloody siege on lone precinct in the middle of a run-down neighbourhood, where Lt.

Ethan Bishop, secretaries…. A precinct is in the process of closing down on its last night of operation when it comes under attack from a gang.

Essentially a more bombastic variation of Night of the Living Dead, Assault on Precinct 13 is a relatively diverting and downright riveting piece of work that shows director John Carpenter suitably utilize a simplistic siege premise and turn it into a rather solid action-thriller on a collective level.

Though there are indeed some expected flaws to be found here as it is Carpenter's second feature after all, Assault on Precinct 13 still makes for minutes of pure entertainment which boasts well-crafted tension, several spectacular action set-pieces, venturous characters, and a distinctively efficient synth score by Carpenter himself.

Quite slow paced at times but still a pretty good action film. Quite progressive for a film from to have a black lead hero and also have a woman hold her own and kill some bad guys.

I loved the shot of the smoke clearing near the end and slowly revealing the 3 characters behind it. Just incredible. Really invigorating filmmaking on a small budget.
