I'm no movie critic, and I won't try to sound like one. What I can say is that I, personally was a part of the army nuclear weapons program for decades.
I know the history behind creating the nuclear bombs that were used in WWII. I even know or knew some of the original people involved.
For much of my life, I worked in buildings that had no windows and were heavily guarded. That included much of what you will see in this film.
No security violations occurred when making this film It is quite accurate. Even the dialogue, you ask?
Be reasonable. Even the actual people these actors portray couldn't possible remember exactly what they SAID on any given day, but the things that happened in the film DID happen in the way they were portrayed.
Newman and Cusack stand out in this film for me, though the overall cast I think was well and thoughtfully selected. I also feel it catches a lot of the feel of the time.
Technically I think the film does a great job of pacing to keep the story moving along well in conjunction with some historical license.
The cinematography is very good and I think Newman captures a believable essence of Gen. Groves and Schultz Robert Oppenheimer.
Cusack role a Dr. Merriman carries the emotional heart of the movie. I think it all comes together well. I think if you are looking for historical entertainment this movie is a great choice.
If you are looking for an historically accurate and informative documentary look elsewhere. What I do know is the characters, the main ones, are based on real people in that real situation: building a military device that would save at least a million US lives by using such a device versus a ground invasion of Japan to end WWII.
This movie, however, is framed with more than that, namely, the logistical, egotistical, political and ethical problems building such a device would surely involve.
Lara Dern is the nurse that steps over the military line to have a fling with team member John Cusack and a host of talent rounds out the cast, some of which are real scientists and physicists, wrestling with their consciences, theoretical physics and the calendar.
The film is well done, moves along smartly in most places and there are enough personal interest scenes to keep it from bogging into personality clashes and blackboard equations, though there are a couple.
If there were a general theme, I'd say it is a film about the headaches involved in selecting, organizing and molding brilliant people into one cohesive unit by a determined soldier intent on accomplishing his assigned mission successfully and on time.
The other parts of the film are what probably what happened as said soldier was doing that. A somewhat fictionalized account of the Manhattan Project, a few of the characters were not real people, the bombs were never hung from the ceiling like that, some things were definitely done for dramatic effect, but overall, the events depicted really happened.
There actually were two scientists who died from doing the "Dragon" experiments, but those happened after the war. Despite the creative license, a good movie, much more true to life than the recent "Manhattan" tv series!

Bisher liefern die Fabriken in Oak Ridge und Hanford aber zu geringe Mengen an spaltbarem Material, um diese Frage endgültig zu beantworten.
Zudem wird das Leben im Army-Camp in Los Alamos aus Sicherheitsgründen immer stärkeren Reglements unterworfen, die den an ihre Freiheit gewohnten Wissenschaftlern zunehmend zu schaffen machen.
Es werden Briefe der Wissenschaftler an ihre Familien oder Freunde geöffnet oder zensiert, Telefongespräche abgehört, teilweise sogar Wissenschaftler bei Reisen beschattet.
Oppenheimer muss dieses Verhältnis auf Druck von Groves beenden, der Tatlock für ein Sicherheitsrisiko hält. Diese Trennung verkraftet Jean Tatlock nicht und begeht wenig später Selbstmord.
Die Schwierigkeiten bei der Konstruktion der Bombe sind nach wie vor immens. Mitten in diese Anstrengungen platzt die Nachricht, dass der Krieg in Europa vorüber ist und Deutschland kapituliert hat.
Zwischen den Wissenschaftlern und General Groves entbrennt daraufhin eine Diskussion, ob unter diesen neuen Vorzeichen eine solche Bombe überhaupt noch notwendig ist.
Groves überzeugt die Wissenschaftler, weiterzuarbeiten, indem er auf den noch andauernden Krieg mit Japan hinweist. Viele der in Los Alamos anwesenden Wissenschaftler sind jedoch nicht beruhigt und haben zunehmend moralische Bedenken bei der Vorstellung, dass ihre Arbeit vom Militär zur Kriegsführung benutzt werden und damit für den Tod vieler Menschen verantwortlich sein könnte.
Es kommt zu einer heftigen Diskussion in Oppenheimers Baracke über die moralische Verantwortung der Wissenschaft bei der Unterstützung der Militärs für eine Atomwaffe.
Dabei zeigen sich vermehrt moralische Skrupel bei den anwesenden Wissenschaftlern. Letztendlich kann Oppenheimer sie aber überzeugen, ihre fast vollendete Arbeit fertigzustellen.
Merriman, der sich mittlerweile in die Krankenschwester Kathleen Robinson verliebt hat, erleidet dabei eine Strahlendosis, die innerhalb von wenigen Tagen zu seinem Tod führt.
Dessen ungeachtet gehen die Vorbereitungen für den Trinity-Test weiter. Obwohl die Wetterbedingungen ungünstig sind, werden die Vorbereitungen pünktlich abgeschlossen.
Am Juli in den frühen Morgenstunden wird die weltweit erste Atombombe erfolgreich gezündet. Der Originaltitel verweist auf zwei konkrete Atombomben, die die reichlich euphemistischen oder zumindest anthropomorphen Namen Fat Man und Little Boy erhalten haben, oder möglicherweise auch auf die Figuren oder die historischen Vorbilder des etwas beleibten Gen.
