Infettato da un veleno mentre salva un villaggio da un gigantesco cinghiale indemoniato, il giovane guerriero Ashitaka cavalca verso Ovest da dove viene il cinghiale in cerca di una cura e s'imbatte in una triplice guerra tra una donna, capo di un accampamento fortificato costruito per proteggere il segreto di un prezioso minerale di ferro , un clan di samurai che vuole impossessarsi del ferro e un gruppo di animali, soprattutto lupi e cinghiali, che vivono nei boschi, furiosi per i danni che gli umani arrecano al loro habitat naturale.
Al loro fianco combatte la giovane Mononoke, allevata dai lupi, che odia tutti gli umani, Ashitaka compreso. I samurai sono irredimibili, ma Miyazaki, anche sceneggiatore, propende a una pacifica coesistenza tra i due campi in lotta.
Con riferimenti all'animismo e allo scintoismo, potrebbe essere distribuito nelle scuole per i suoi contenuti ecologici e morali. Di alto livello sul piano figurativo, lievemente mescolato all'uso del digitale.
Si tratta di uno dei lungometraggi meglio riusciti di Miyazaki. Un dio cinghiale, tramutatosi in demone per colpa di un dolore inflittogli dagli umani, sta attaccando il villaggio del giovane guerriero Ashitaka.
E' stato fatto un lavoro ottimale per riportare in vita un film datato e che ai tempi [ Un film pieno di poesia, considerazioni filosofiche ed esistenziali, immagini epiche, disegni fantastici.
