The animation is a bit dated now but the movie is still sweet and full of the fun I remember. I love ancient animals-smilodon in particular-so Diego is one of my favorite characters in this prehistoric production.
His "cool-cat" exterior slowly melts away and reveals a cuddly kitten as the movie and the series! Sid is a lovable clutz and poor Manny the mammoth is the reluctant leader of the strange pack.
They have lots of adventure, heartache and headaches as they journey to return an infant boy to his father-or to the waiting jaws of wily saber-toothed cats!
It's definitely worth a watch! I wanted to see this because of the Sloth, but it's modeled more after a prehistoric sloth, not the kind of sloth we have today- I looove sloths.
This movie is probably awesome for young children but as an adult it was not stimulating enough. It did not grab my attention enough.
In "Ice Age" , the first of the superb three-part series, some traditions are established that hold true for later films in the series.
Scrat, the saber-toothed squirrel, is wrestling with his prized acorn although in this outing some of his vignettes become brief interactions with the main characters.
In later movies of the series he becomes more of an independent entity and even finds a soul mate. The stage is set for the later independently embedded cartoons in which the squirrel is constantly trying to conquer that iconic acorn, at battle with nature and his nut.
At the beginning of this film there's a huge migration to warmer climes going on with lots of different species heading south.
Manny, the mammoth voice of Ray Romano is going against the tide, headed in the other direction. This first film is noteworthy because of the presence of human beings, a sight of Stonehenge, and the very interesting episode with the prehistoric human cave drawings.
Manny sees a mammoth family and becomes very lonesome about his own isolated plight without a mate. There is a great deal of story-building in this movie with many ideas planted for further chapters which will bring on the introduction of more characters, and mating instincts will flower.
Manny meets Sid, the sloth, and immediately develops a dislike for the pushy Sid. Later they find a human baby, and both develop a love for the child.
The baby is the catalyst for forming a new herd. Diego, the carnivorous saber-toothed tiger, is introduced as a predator, and he wants to grab the human baby for his tiger gang to devour.
There's an inspired musical section with the extinct dodo birds who seemed too dumb to survive. For kids and adults watching there are of a lot of lessons to be learned.
Manny saves Diego's life which transforms him into a loyal member of the new herd. He shows gratitude, and the baby helps to "humanize" him.
The importance of friendship and loyalty, the need for belonging to a group, and the need for companionship-all of these come out of the dramatic action.
In Blu-Ray this movie has stunning color and visual effects. There are a lot of scary adventures including cascading ice, molten lava, teetering icy crags.
There's some bathroom humor that kids will probably get and titter over. Even though these are animals, the moviemakers have concentrated on characterization.
They give human qualities to the animals in fact they are almost ideal humans , and, of course, the animals speak English. It's full of vocal and sight gags.
The movie is a treat for all. If you need a lift and feeling low, watch one of the Ice Age DVDs, they are so much fun and just make you feel better no matter what.
Laughter is great for your body, sends all these great endorphins through your body and just makes you feel better.
These films, the Ice Age series, all of them make you laugh so much and just lift your spirits. So the next time your feeling low, pick up one of these films and watch it.
I do truly love this series, they are so much fun. I watch them with my grandchildren and great grandchildren which makes it even better.
I had cancer and my daughter and I are nurses and have been taught how laughter helps your body to heal. I guess it works, it did in my case, at least added to all my other treatments, this treatment was the best, just sit and laugh, how can you go wrong..
It has been 13 years for me, lung cancer. These films were not there then, but Shrek was and boy did I watch that over and over.
I found all the funny movies I could, I wish these films were around then. Try it, it certainly cannot hurt you.
The movie is fine. The sloth is funny, the mammoth is grumpy, and the sabertooth tiger is not as motormouthed and sassy as one would hope.
The plot is a standard quest with a baby plot with mismatched family elements and healing in the journey. It is sometimes funny and sometimes clever.
Ice Age is that kind of movie where the kids are laughing at the prat-falls, the adults are laughing at the witty banter and pop-culture references, and everybody's having a good time.
A-list actors bring real character to their animated alter-egos, and amid all the slapstick there is some real heart to be found in this tale of three odd-duck ice age mammals trying to return a lost baby to his cave-man dad.
There is enough real drama to perhaps upset a very small child here baby's mom gets swept away in a river, mammoth remembers his own parents being speared by humans, bad lion leader gets axed by falling icicles but it gives the movie a relevant story and emotional depth.
For education, kids will learn about all the megafauna of the ice age, from mammoths to sloths to sabre-tooth cats, and about the magical cave paintings like those of Chauvet and Lasceaux.
And for extra comic relief, there's the mad sabre-toothed squirrel desperately trying to stash his nut before the winter.
But the real point is the bond of friendship forged by three mis-matched miscreant mammals through trying to do a good deed.

The film itself is simply top notch with a well written story line and is brought back to life here on Blu Ray. Its perhaps not the pristine quality of Toy Story when it comes to Blu Ray transfers, but never the less is still worthy of purchasing it on Blu Ray.
Where I feel Ice Age really comes to life is with its soundtrack to which David Newman I must say as done an excellent job with the sound for this film.
Which is here presented in DTS 5. I think the only one I have not liked a lot is the one with the little boy. I've read that some people have complained because the Ice Age movies are not scientifically accurate.
This one does have some scientific gobbledygook in it. Whether it's accurate gobbledygook or not, I don't know. Or care. I watch these when I'm looking for something light, an escape from this crazy world.
Anyway, this one might be my favorite If you love the Ice Age movies you'll love this one too. All of the Ice Age movies make my 10 year old laugh like a hyena.
This one is especially timely as we are watching Cosmos with Neil Degrasse Tyson as a family. Ice Age Collision Course ties in perfectly with our family's current love of astronomy and even features a character Neil DeBuck Weasel.
This DVD does not play. It spins wildly, vibrating the player. Exactly the same experience in both. Unfortunately, because we ordered it to take on a family vacation for our twin six year old boys, who LOVE Ice Age films.

I have always loved the Ice Age series of films and this is one of them. I love all of the characters in the film and the plot was great as well.
